Positivist and Constructionist Theories: Basic Differences.
Social constructionism is a general term sometimes applied to theories that emphasize the socially created nature of social life. Social Constructionism is something that a group in society has constructed, for example brotherhood is a social constructionism.
Social Constructionism essentially represents a sociological theory of knowledge that studies the development of various sociological phenomena in social contexts. A social construct, the anchor of this theory, refers to a concept that is the artefact of a specific group.
The essay focuses on the social construction of crime, and the possible reasons for these social constructions. In the first section, the essay explains what crime is, and the constructionist perspective theory. In the Second section my essay focuses on the crime as socially constructed and why it is socially constructed.
Where as social constructionist theories are focused on deviance occurring in social factors external to individual people.Each of these views helped to contribute to the theory of how and why deviance occurs in society. Durkheim’s theory of anomie was a major social construction theory.
The theory is also sociological in its emphasis on the role of social forces in creating deviance. On the negative side, anomie theory has been criticized for its generality. Critics note the theory's lack of statements concerning the process of learning deviance, including the internal motivators for deviance.
My main focuses were on the social disorganization theory and the anomie and strain theory. However, I did touch on some of the strategies of the ecological theory and the elements of the cultural deviance theory. In order to write this paper I read up on the material in our class textbook and in my social deviance textbook.
Constructionist looks at deviance from a different perspective. It is the “social construction of deviance” that needs to be explained, not the (“wrong”) choices of individuals.
